US phone number for Telegram verification
Telegram signs you in with a phone number and a one-time code. If you want an account that is not tied to your own SIM, a temporary US number lets you get through that first step and read the code in your browser.
What a US number is used for on Telegram
Telegram does not ask for an email or a username to register. The phone number is the account. That makes a rented number a straightforward way to open a second account for a community, a channel, a bot test, or a project you want to keep apart from your personal contacts.

Know how the code is delivered
Telegram sends the login code in the app if you are already signed in somewhere else with the same number. If there is no other session, it sends an SMS. A brand new number has no other session, so the SMS is the normal route and it appears in your SMS OTPS dashboard.
Ask for the code once, wait, and only then use the option to resend. Several fast resends can make Telegram slow down new codes for that number.

- Pick the SMS option rather than a phone call, since a text-only number cannot take calls.
- Set up two-step verification and a recovery email in Telegram right after you sign in. If you ever lose the number, that is your way back in.
Limits to keep in mind
The number is rented for the verification only. When the order ends you cannot receive further codes on it, and the number may be given to someone else later. A Telegram account you want to keep for years needs a number you control.
